What is direct access?

Direct Access refers to the ability to come directly to physical therapy without seeing an MD first.   Montana is a direct access state, however, some insurance companies require you to have a referral for them to pay.   Click here to see if your insurance company is listed, if you don't see it, you can call the number on the back of your card and ask "Do I need a referral to access physical therapy services?".  If you are electing to take advantage of our Prompt Pay Discount, then you do not need a referral.

If your insurance requires a referral, it can be from an MD, PA, DO or Nurse Practitioner.  Referrals from other providers such as chiropractors, massage therapists or trainers will not be accepted by your insurance provider.

Will a referral help my insurance pay?

Obtaining a referral from your MD does not change your insurance plan.  That is, if you have a high deductible you will have reach it regardless if you have a referral or not.  The referral would only come into effect if you want your visits to go towards your deductible.   Often if you have a high deductible plan, it's cheaper and more efficient to skip the MD visit and come directly to us and take advantage of our Prompt Pay Rate.
